What used to be here?

From 1821 to 1849, this street was known as Gryazny Pereulok (Dirty Lane). In 1836, however, it was officially given the name Ertelev Pereulok, in honour of Fyodor Fyodorovich Ertel (1767–1825), who was Chief of Police from 1802 to 1806. On 6 October 1923, the street was renamed in honour of the Russian writer Anton Chekhov. The justification for this was that Chekhov used to live in an apartment belonging to the publisher Alexei Suvorin, who resided in building No. 6 on this street. At first, the street was known as Ulitsa Pisatelya Chekhova, or ‘Writer Chekhov Street’, but the contemporary version of the name began to be used from 1925, and by 1926 it had replaced the cumbersome alternative for good.
